Here is a link to the Johnette Howard article released today on ESPN.com.  It takes a fair hand at analyzing the situation and outlines my greater ethical struggle of releasing a tape that will benefit millions of people vs. going against the personal judgment of a man with ALS.  I feel very strongly that I made the right choice although it has put a great strain on my relationship with Steve.  Just to read a few of the hundreds of emails I received from concerned parents and those affected by concussions in football reminds me that this is a much bigger issue with widespread ramifications.

I always wanted to be a football player. Health problems when I was young kept me from it. Now, looking at the health problems that we’re discovering in football players, I can’t help but thank God for that. I look at the comment below mine accusing you of betraying someone for the almighty dollar. Isn’t that what the Saints players were doing? Isn’t that *exactly* what they were doing, betraying the sacred trust of fellow tradesmen for what amounts to a pittance on top of their salaries? A sportsman should have class. A sportsman values the livelihood of his opponents more than the win-loss record of his team. A sportsman has a heart as big as his biceps.

I read the article by Johnette Howard, and my heart breaks for your relationship with Steve Gleason. I think she captured the moral ambiguity very well. I hope and pray that the two of you can be reconciled, that you can complete this film for him and his wife and his son. God bless you both as you work this out. Stay strong under fire.

    Grace and Peace,
